Which Motherboard Should I Choose: ASUS or MSI for B850?

Hey everyone, I'm trying to decide between two motherboards for my new build using the B850 chipset (AM5): the ASUS TUF Gaming B850 Plus Wi-Fi or the MSI B850 Gaming Plus Wi-Fi. Here are some specifics I need help with:

1. Will the MSI's sound quality be poor because of the Realtek ALC897 Codec, or is it generally considered sufficient since many boards use it?
2. How is the rear USB port layout on the MSI? There are quite a few USB 2.0 ports, but I'm curious about how to effectively use the USB-C port.
3. Why does the MSI only have two rear audio outputs? Can I use a 2.1 audio setup, or is that out of the question?
4. Is the audio output layout on the ASUS better?

Also, if there are better options out there with Wi-Fi 7, at least a 2.5G LAN port, and good power for the AMD 7800X3D without drastically increasing the price, I'd love to hear about those too! My build includes an RX 9070XT and the AMD 7800X3D.

I've had some issues with my ASUS motherboard as well. Switched to MSI with the B850 chipset and it's been solid for me so far. That said, both brands have had their fair share of problems lately, so it’s a gamble either way. Just keep an eye on reviews for any new models!

Yeah, I’ve heard about the wake from sleep issues on the ASUS. It seems like no matter what you pick, there are going to be quirks.

The ALC897 codec on the MSI isn't the best for onboard audio, so if sound quality is a priority for you, I'd lean towards the ASUS TUF Gaming board. Their audio setup tends to be better overall, in my experience!

Honestly, who even uses onboard audio these days? Most people are opting for dedicated sound cards or external DACs, so it might not be a huge factor.
