Why did my ROG STRIX X870-F fail after a BIOS update?

Hey everyone! I recently had an interesting mishap with my ROG STRIX X870-F Gaming WiFi motherboard. After just two weeks, I attempted a BIOS update using a FAT32 flash drive and made sure everything was set correctly. I used the BIOS Flash button, and it initially flashed green for a few minutes before shutting off. When I powered it back on, it went through POST but displayed a message saying "Updating BIOS, please wait..." and then switched off again. Unfortunately, after that, it wouldn't POST anymore and gave me the Amber Light of Death.

I didn't touch any hardware components since everything was working perfectly before the update. I troubleshot by breadboarding all my parts, but nothing changed. Eventually, I exchanged the board for a new one, and it worked fine, leading me to wonder: what could have gone wrong during the BIOS update? I'm curious about potential solutions in case it happens with my new board.

That's a bummer! It's tough to say exactly what went wrong, but it might just have been a faulty flash. Have you thought about trying the update again with a different USB stick? Sometimes using another drive and redownloading the BIOS file can help. Also, make sure you give it enough time to boot after flashing; it could take more than 5 minutes. If flashing again after it boots is an option, that's usually safer since you can see the progress. Maybe try the flashback button as your last resort!

I did think about the RAM training, but I left it on for quite a bit—at least 30 minutes while I went to the store. I even tried rolling back to the factory BIOS, but it still had issues. Maybe that cheap USB drive was the culprit? It was just a freebie I got.
