Why Aren’t Thin Clients More Common in Medical Practices?

Hey everyone! I'm currently working in IT but I'm looking to switch over to the medical field. Right now, we're using a lot of cloud-based Microsoft solutions, but I know that's not how medical practices operate. I'm planning to set up an on-premise server for a smoother transition. My main question is: Why don't more clinics use thin clients with VDI or RDS? I think this could simplify hardware and software maintenance a lot. Are there major downsides to this approach that I should be aware of? I'd love to get your feedback!

Great question! Thin clients and systems like RDS or VDI are definitely gaining traction, but they're not universal just yet. It depends a lot on the specific needs of the facility. For instance, some legacy software just won't run in those environments, and certain diagnostic tools need to be directly connected to a workstation. Plus, cost comes into play too; sometimes, it's cheaper to run specialized software on a dedicated machine rather than setting up a whole server for it. Vendor support is another big issue—some software won’t be supported if it's running virtually, which complicates things.

Totally agree! Legacy systems can be a nightmare.

Got it, the legacy software definitely complicates things. But what about clinics that can use RDS—would they find this setup economically viable?
