I have a Seagate hard drive that's been beeping for a few months now. I didn't want to spend a ton of money to repair it since the only thing I really want back are some videos stored on it – they're not crucial, but I'd like to get them back if possible. I know the risks of trying to fix it myself, but I decided to go for it anyway. I opened the drive but stopped because I didn't have the right tool for the final screws. Now that I've got the tools, I opened it fully and noticed that the read/write heads (the sharp thing) are off the spinning disk. I've seen online that people manually move it back to the disk, but mine is already off. So, I'm wondering if there's anything more I can attempt at this stage or if it's beyond saving. I suspect dust has gotten inside, so I feel like it's too late now. Any advice?

Opening a hard drive without a clean room is really risky. Even a tiny speck of dust can cause serious damage to the platters, which is where your data is stored. From what you've described, it sounds like your read/write heads aren't making contact with the platter anymore. If you try to move them manually, you could end up causing more damage. Your best bet would be to get a professional to look at it, but I get that might be pricey. Just keep in mind the risks involved with DIY repairs – it's risky business!

Yeah, I kind of accepted that I may have lost those videos. It's frustrating, but I don’t want to risk ruining it even more. I was just hoping for a miracle! I'm not ready to spend a ton just for some old footage.
