How Can I Migrate My Azure VMs Before They Retire in 2028?

Hey everyone! I just received an email from Azure letting me know that some VM SKUs, specifically "F, Fs, Fsv2, Lsv2, G, Gs, Av2, Amv2, and B-series Azure VMs," are set to retire on November 15, 2028. I realize I have a bit of time to sort this out, but I have quite a few B-series VMs in my environment. They're low usage, which is why I went with them, and I need them for certain systems. I'm concerned about finding a suitable replacement that won't break the bank or require me to re-architect a huge part of my setup. Has anyone else seen this email, or are there options that I've overlooked?

This whole thing about the "B-series Azure VMs" is kind of confusing, right? Just so you know, the retirement notice specifically refers to the B-series V1, but it's not the whole B family that's going away. Microsoft typically keeps the newer B-series (v2) available, so you might want to check into that.

Yeah, that clears it up a bit! I couldn’t figure out why they’d ditch burstable machines—they’re still super handy. But I guess it’s just the older versions.

I was confused too! I wasn’t sure if it was a typo since I didn’t see the B series listed in the retirement info. Glad to know the newer versions are still coming!

Just a heads up, the email about the retirement mainly refers to reserved instances, not necessarily the VMs themselves. I’ve had the same concerns, so it’s good to gather more info. Microsoft really needs to simplify their notifications for us!

For real! The way they present info can be super confusing. Knowing it’s just reserved instances helps—I guess we can breathe a little easier.

Exactly! But it would be nice to have a comprehensive migration guide for the B-series, similar to what they’ve done for other VM series.

Just to clarify, it sounds like there are newer B-series (v2) options that can replace your old VMs. If you’re still using older SKUs, they’re the ones to be concerned about, but the v2 versions are still supported. Check out the migration options on Microsoft’s site too, as there are methods to transition without a complete overhaul.

Thanks for pointing that out! I just looked up the Bsv2 series and it seems to fill in the gaps nicely. I was worried about costs, but it looks like they might actually be cheaper in the long run.

Awesome! I think I’ll need to investigate how that upgrade process works since not all upgrades are straightforward. Appreciate the response!
