My Computer Just Died – How Do I Figure Out What’s Broken?

Hi everyone! I'm dealing with a frustrating issue: my computer suddenly powered down while I was using it, leaving me with a black screen and no response when I hit the power button. The power LED on the case went dark, but the RGB lights on the motherboard are still glowing, so I suspect the PSU might be functioning to some degree. Here are my specs: Linux OS, Ryzen 5 1600 CPU, ROG Strix B350-F GAMING motherboard, 16 GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR4 RAM (4 sticks), and a Corsair RM650i PSU. I've tried a bunch of troubleshooting steps: removing everything except for the CPU, motherboard, one stick of RAM, the PSU, and the case and CPU fans, and reseating everything. I also measured the PSU voltages with a multimeter, and they seemed fine. I reset the CMOS and replaced the battery, plus I tried shorting the power pin directly. Nothing has worked! I suspect the problem might be with the CPU or motherboard, but I don't have spares to swap out and test. Any ideas on how to identify which part is faulty? I've heard CPU failures are uncommon, but I'm at a loss here. Thanks for the help!

It sounds like the PSU might be the culprit. Sometimes it's hard to know for sure unless you test with a different one. If you can try a friend's PSU or even invest in a multimeter to check the voltages under load, that could give you more insight. Hopefully, it’s just the power supply! Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion! I did check the voltages before, but I’ll see if I can borrow another PSU and give it a shot.

I'm leaning towards the PSU as well. It's the part that often fails, and if the voltages are only checked without a load, they might look fine, but could still be failing. Catching that under load might be trickier, but it could help narrow things down! Good luck!
