Which Operating System Should I Choose for Backend Development: Linux or macOS?

As someone who's been using Macs for 40 years, I can say there’s something nice about really knowing the environment you’re working with. While macOS is stable and reliable, diving into Linux adds excitement and learning opportunities. Both have their perks!

While macOS is elegant with great hardware, it can have limitations due to its closed architecture. For instance, Apple's RDP is not free like on Windows. If you’re looking for flexibility, consider going for a high-end laptop that runs Windows 11 with Linux capabilities through WSL2, giving you the best of both worlds!

A lot of developers I know prefer using Mac laptops because they offer great performance and battery life. Plus, since most servers run on Linux, it’s useful to be comfortable with it. You can deploy to Linux environments pretty smoothly from a Mac, making it a solid choice overall.

Honestly, either OS can work well for backend development. Just make sure that if you pick a Linux laptop, it’s modern and performs well. Avoid older technology like magnetic hard drives because it just slows you down.

I’ve been a full-stack dev for a long time, and I can tell you I’ve used Macs successfully to develop for Linux without issues. The hardware is very reliable, and it allows me to run software like Photoshop which isn’t available on Linux. But, if you enjoy experimenting, a Linux laptop can also be a good option.
