Can I Move My Operating System to an SSD Without Transferring Everything?

I recently bought a new SSD and I'd like to move my operating system from my HDD to the SSD. I want to keep my other programs and downloaded files on the HDD, but I've noticed that most tutorials only show how to transfer everything from the HDD. Also, is a 256GB SSD enough space for just my OS and a few light games like Terraria, since I'm planning to use the HDD for other storage?

You have two options: you can clone your HDD to the SSD or do a fresh install of the OS on the SSD. I’d suggest a fresh install if you can, as it might save you some headaches later on.

Honestly, 256GB might not cut it, especially if you're using Windows 8.1 or later. I’d recommend going for at least a 500GB or even a 1TB SSD if possible. For programs, yes, they should go on the C: drive, while your downloaded files can remain on the HDD. Just be careful with the tutorials; some might be outdated, so ensure they’re recent.

Absolutely, you can transfer just your OS to the SSD as long as the used space on your HDD isn’t bigger than the SSD’s capacity. As for the 256GB, it can work if you’re only putting your OS and essential programs on it. Just keep your games and files on the HDD to save space.
