How can I free up storage on my Windows 11 device for updates?

I'm running into a storage issue on my Windows 11 laptop. Currently, I have 117 GB used and only 3.04 GB free, which won't allow me to download the latest update. I've already deleted everything unnecessary, emptied the recycle bin, and manually removed temporary files, but the storage space hasn't changed at all. It still shows that 9.11 GB is used by temporary files even after my efforts. I usually keep my device clean and only have essential programs like Microsoft apps and Adobe installed. I'm starting to wonder if the files I've deleted are actually being removed. I'm considering getting an external hard drive to offload some data, but I'm skeptical since it seems like my storage issue persists regardless of what I do. Any advice?

Try using tools like Wiztree or WinDirStat to see where all your disk space is being used. Also, running the command 'powercfg -h off' in the command prompt will disable hibernation and remove that file, freeing up some space.

You should definitely consider getting a second drive or upgrading to a larger one, like a 1TB. A 128GB drive just isn't enough these days. It'll give you more breathing room for updates and general usage.

Run Directory Report; it's a handy tool that shows you exactly what’s taking up disk space. Also, don't forget to uninstall any programs you don’t use anymore via the Control Panel.

Before making major changes, ensure you have backups in place! But yeah, upgrading your drive or getting a large external one seems like the best route to avoid further issues.

If you're plugging in an external hard drive, Windows should recognize it and could let you use that drive for the update. Check out Microsoft's support page for more details on freeing up space for updates!
