Why Are My Two Laptops Getting Such Different WiFi Speeds?

I have two laptops that are about the same age and both have similar WiFi cards. One laptop is getting speeds of around 700 Mbps, while the other is only getting 50 to 70 Mbps. Both laptops are connected wirelessly to my router. The slower laptop has a much fuller hard drive compared to the faster one. Could this be affecting the WiFi speed, or are there other reasons why one is so slow? I'm not very tech-savvy, so any advice would be appreciated!

Yes, a full hard drive can definitely slow down your laptop's performance overall, which might affect the internet speed as well. Could you share the exact specs of both devices? That might help pinpoint the issue better.

What kind of specs are you looking for? The type of laptop or the wireless cards?

Have you tried connecting the slower laptop directly to your router using an Ethernet cable? That'll help you see if the issue is related to WiFi or if it's deeper in the laptop itself. If it works well with an Ethernet connection, the WiFi setup might need some attention.

Make sure you're checking which frequency your laptops are using. The slower one might be connected to the 2.4 GHz band, which usually maxes out around 50 Mbps. If it's possible, try switching to the 5 GHz band for better speeds. Do you know how to check which one it’s using?

How do I check if it's on 2.4GHz or 5GHz?
