Hey everyone! I'm looking for some advice on which Linux distributions are suitable for an older laptop I have, specifically a Dell Latitude D430 from 2007. I've got some basic experience with Linux since I used it at my last job, and I've even installed it on virtual machines. Previously, I worked with Manjaro, but now I need something that runs smoothly on this older hardware, ideally with a user interface that can support Unity. Any suggestions?

If your laptop has:
- 256+ MB RAM: try Tiny Core Linux JWM
- 512+ MB RAM: Puppy Linux JWM could work
- 1+ GB RAM: antiX Linux with IceWM is a good option
- 2+ GB RAM: Lubuntu LXQt would definitely perform better
- 3+ GB RAM: Linux Mint with Xfce is really user-friendly
- 6+ GB RAM: Linux Mint with Cinnamon is also a solid choice.
Your laptop is pretty old, but if you swap out the HDD for an SSD, you might see a performance improvement. Just keep in mind you’ll still hit a wall with RAM limitations.
Just a heads up, make sure your laptop supports 64-bit, as some D430 models don’t. I'd recommend trying MX Linux with the Fluxbox edition or going for XFCE. Keep in mind that you’ll struggle to get modern websites to run smoothly due to the age of the hardware; anything built for newer systems might not perform well.
Most Linux distros should work just fine. Just keep in mind that the main resource hog will be your web browser, so choose one that’s lightweight, regardless of which distro you go with.
I’ve got a machine from around 2011 that runs MX Linux with XFCE without any issues. I think your laptop should handle that pretty well too.
I suspect that Unity should have Linux binaries available. You might be better off looking for something with XFCE, since that runs lighter. Debian could work well for you too, but really, most major distros should fit the bill.

Thanks for the quick suggestions! I’m going to give Lubuntu LXQt a shot.
