Why is unlocking my BitLocker-encrypted 4TB drive taking so long?

I recently factory reset my Windows 11 PC, and unexpectedly, all my drives got encrypted with BitLocker. The C: drive is unlocked and fine, but both the D: and E: drives are locked. I managed to unlock the D: drive quickly since it's only 169 GB, but I'm having a major issue with my E: drive, which is 4 TB and has around 2 TB used. When I try to unlock it using the recovery key, the unlock button just remains highlighted, and nothing seems to happen. My PC becomes unresponsive too. Is this normal for a larger drive? Should I just wait for it to unlock, or is this process different from decrypting that happens later when I turn off BitLocker? I'm just confused why unlocking takes this long, as it seems like a straightforward password entry.

It's possible the smaller drives have hardware encryption and can unlock much faster than your 4TB drive, which might be relying on your CPU to handle the unlocking process. This is common since larger drives can take longer if they're not equipped with built-in encryption features. Just give it some time; sometimes larger drives will eventually unlock but can feel like they're stuck during the process.

Just to confirm, unlocking usually shouldn’t take forever even for large drives, but it can depend on your system’s performance and drive capabilities. If the unlock button is stuck, it might be worth giving it a little extra time before considering a reboot. However, if it stays unresponsive, a restart might be necessary, but do this with caution as it can sometimes lead to issues.

Unlocking and decrypting are essentially tied together in Windows 11. So yes, it's expected that the unlock process may take some time, especially with larger drives. If it's really unresponsive, you might want to wait it out a bit more. Patience is key here, but do check if your system isn't freezing completely.
