How to Prevent Hourly Employees from Working Off the Clock?

I'm looking for tips on how to stop hourly employees from working when they aren't supposed to. My boss is concerned because, despite telling people not to work off the clock and having them sign acknowledgments, some still reply to emails and do other tasks. We've even had a case where someone sued and won, which brings me into this situation. We operate mainly within Microsoft 365, so I'm considering implementing some California-specific policies for hourly workers. I'm also exploring the idea of a script to restrict access to certain apps outside of work hours, maybe by whitelisting our static IP. I'd love to hear any suggestions you might have!

One approach is to restrict mobile app access for hourly employees. You can set time-locked VPN access for most products and leverage Active Directory for time-based access controls as well. If you need your staff to work during off-hours in emergencies, keep track of when they access work materials outside their regular hours and establish a policy where they need a legitimate reason, like a ticket number, for doing so. A few formal warnings can clarify that the policy is serious, which could help in potential lawsuits as well.

I like that idea! Just to clarify, are you suggesting that they shouldn't have any mobile app access at all? That seems like it could slow things down when it comes to productivity.
