Could My Laptop Be Infected with a Virus?

I've been having issues with some applications on my laptop opening automatically as soon as I start it up, even though I've disabled all the 'run on startup' options in those apps. These apps don't show up in either the Startup Apps settings or the Task Manager. When I checked the Task Scheduler, I found some suspicious tasks under the '/CareCenter' folder, specific to my Acer Nitro 5 laptop, which I can't confirm if it's related to this issue. One particular task named 'Reader_Sl_Reg_HKLMWow6432Run' deletes itself when I try to check it out, and now I see that the Task Scheduler is disabled without any action on my part. I've run a full scan with Kaspersky Plus, but it didn't find anything. Do you think I might have a virus, or could there be another explanation?

Sounds like you might just be dealing with some annoying Acer bloatware rather than an actual virus. If you’re really concerned, a fresh install of Windows can clear things up.

I’d recommend backing up your files manually—photos and important documents—onto a separate drive. If you suspect a virus, it's better to be safe. Then, consider reinstalling the OS. If you're up for it, trying Ubuntu with Wine could be a great alternative!

That 'Reader_Sl_Reg_HKLMWow6432Run' task seems to point towards Adobe Acrobat, which might be the source of the issue. The 'WOW6432' part usually indicates compatibility with 32 or 64-bit systems. It's probably just Acrobat or a program disguised as it.

HKLM stands for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, which is a key in the Windows Registry. It’s related to defined settings for software on your system.

If you're worried about malware, doing a clean reinstall of your operating system is the safest bet. It's a straightforward process and can help eliminate hidden threats. You can find step-by-step instructions online or in tech forums.
