Best Operating System Options for an Old Laptop?

I'm trying to figure out the best operating system for my older Acer laptop, which has a first-gen Pentium M processor and 2GB of RAM. Initially, I was looking to install Windows 98, but I ran into issues with the onboard audio, so that didn't pan out. I also attempted using Debian, but it didn't work out as expected. Ideally, I want a lightweight operating system that can handle some light tasks like browsing, watching YouTube videos, and general office work. Any recommendations for a distro that would work well with my machine's specs?

I’d be cautious about installing anything too demanding; you might want a dedicated lightweight distro for older hardware. For example, you could check out Enlightenment, although it has had stability issues. Given your setup, make sure to keep the GUI lightweight to avoid performance problems!

Try running antiX and add uBlockOrigin to your browser to help with performance. Just a heads up, though, that older systems often struggle with 720p streaming. You might need to stick to 480p depending on your CPU and network speed. It should help with light browsing tasks as well!

It might be tough for that laptop to run modern browsers or stream YouTube effectively, given its age. You didn’t mention what issues you faced with Debian, but if you’re looking for alternatives, consider trying antiX. It's based on Debian and tailored for older hardware, plus it offers legacy kernels that could be more compatible. Another option is Alpine Linux, which tends to run well on older machines and has a simple package manager. Good luck finding a distro that works for you!
