Why is My New Ryzen 5 Build Underperforming Compared to My Old Intel i5?

I recently put together a gaming setup using an RX580 8GB, 16GB of DDR4 RAM, and previously had an Intel i5-8400. Unfortunately, that computer broke down, and I quickly picked up a custom-built PC that has the same GPU, the same amount of RAM, and a faster NVME SSD, but it runs on a Ryzen 5 2600 CPU with 6 cores and 6 threads. Logically, I thought the Ryzen would outperform the Intel, but I'm experiencing a drop in FPS—sometimes up to 100 frames less in games like Valorant. This doesn't make sense to me, especially since my drivers are fully updated. Can anyone explain why I'm seeing such a significant difference?

It's possible that the Ryzen 2600 is overheating, especially if it’s using a stock cooler. The 2600 generally performs better when overclocked—ideally to around 4.2 GHz. When they both launched, the Ryzen was cheaper, but only overclocking gives it the edge in games. You might want to consider trying that out!

Gotcha, I’ve got a decent cooler. I’ve never overclocked anything, but I’ll research it. Thanks for the tip!

Firstly, you might want to check the speed of your RAM. The Ryzen 5 2600 is not drastically better than the i5-8400; while it has more cores, they are quite similar in performance overall. Are your motherboard’s core drivers updated? Knowing your motherboard model would help too!
