Help! I Lost My Word Document – Any Recovery Tips?

I really need some help! I've been working on this research project for a whole month, and yesterday I closed my laptop without saving it. Now, when I opened Word again, it's showing me a version of the file from two weeks ago, and all my recent work seems to be gone. I stumbled across a 'DAT file' in the save options, which has a date from yesterday, but when I tried to open it in Word, the text looks completely scrambled—just boxes instead of actual letters. I'm not sure what to do next!

First, try opening Word by itself and see if it prompts you to recover any recent files. If that doesn't work, you might want to give renaming that DAT file a shot—change the extension to .doc or .docx and see if that helps. If it still doesn't work, you might be out of luck, unfortunately.

Just a heads up about that DAT file: It’s not exactly what you want to open with Word. It's usually related to other file types and can get corrupted if handled incorrectly. Make sure to back up your work wherever you can, just in case.

Have you checked if you can access the version history for the file? Microsoft has a tool for that which could help recover previous versions. Just make sure to back it up right away if you manage to get it back—it's crucial to keep multiple copies of important files!
