I'm having a really tough time trying to work between GIMP and Inkscape. GIMP can't seem to open Inkscape or .ai files with layers, and Inkscape doesn't support opening GIMP's .psd files either. It's incredibly frustrating! Is there any way to get these programs to play nice with each other? Are there any alternatives that allow for smoother transitions between raster and vector work? Or should I just consider switching to Adobe products?

GIMP is designed for raster graphics, while Inkscape specializes in vector graphics. They aren't really meant to work together. You can think of it like trying to work with sound files in a spreadsheet program—just not compatible.
Usually, for raster images, you'll save your work in GIMP as a PNG to import into Inkscape. However, going back and forth isn’t very efficient, so I'd recommend sticking to one program for a project whenever possible.
If you're serious about working with vectors, check out the .svg format. It’s really versatile as it’s XML-based—meaning you can edit it directly in text editors like Notepad, and it integrates nicely with web technologies. It’s an option worth checking out if you want to merge the two workflows without frustration.
Exactly! One is for creating vector art, and the other is for bitmap images. If you want to repeatedly work with both formats, consider using Adobe Photoshop alongside Illustrator for easier switching.
