I have an older computer with 2GB of DDR2 RAM and a 256GB SSD. Currently, I have Mint installed, but it feels a bit sluggish (I know, limited RAM!). I'm planning to upgrade the machine eventually, but not right now. Can anyone suggest a more lightweight Linux distribution that would run better on my system?

For a straightforward option, Debian with LXQt is a great choice! It's lightweight and efficient, perfect for your machine's specs. Also, keep in mind that web browsers can consume a lot of memory, so that could be the real bottleneck when using your computer.
Some folks suggest Arch Linux because it’s lightweight and highly customizable. But it’s quite a challenge for beginners. Just make sure you understand that the base installation does require more than 1GB of storage, and it can get heavy once you start adding apps.
AntiX or Peppermint OS are my top picks for machines like yours. Remember, modern web pages can really chew through RAM, so even with a lightweight distro, browser usage might still slow things down.
If you're comfortable tinkering a bit, consider using a minimal installation like Ubuntu Server with the i3 window manager. This setup can run pretty smoothly on older hardware once you add a few applications. Just be ready to do a little DIY for your desktop environment!
You might want to try AntiX, Bodhi Linux, or MX Linux with the Fluxbox desktop. AntiX is particularly lightweight, and I've heard it's running at about 300MB of RAM when idle. It's great for older hardware! Bodhi has a nice polish to it, especially with its Enlightenment/Moksha desktop, sitting at around 430MB. If you're looking for something even lighter, Puppy Linux could be a great choice as well.
