Do I Need to Reinstall Windows When Changing Motherboards?

I recently encountered a problem with my budget pre-built PC that came with Windows 10; the motherboard has failed. I'm planning to transfer the GPU, CPU, RAM, and SSD to a new motherboard and case. I need to know if it's necessary to reinstall Windows from scratch after this switch. I want to ensure I don't lose any files on the current system. I have access to the user account and password, so is there a way to keep those files intact?

A friend of mine had a similar situation and found out from Microsoft's documentation that changing the motherboard can indeed require a new Windows registration, but reinstalling Windows isn't mandatory as long as you have your license code ready.

If you try switching the SSD to the new build and it boots up with no issues, that could save you a ton of hassle! Just make sure to grab the required motherboard drivers afterward. It’s always a good plan to back up your files before you start tinkering, just in case!

It might be better to reinstall since it’s a pre-built system, but for keeping your files, cloud storage or an external hard drive works well. Also, keep your Windows license info handy; you might need it due to the motherboard change.

You don't strictly have to reinstall Windows, but given how pre-built systems often come with a lot of unnecessary software, it might be a good idea. You could set up the new motherboard without reinstalling, back up your files first, and then do the reinstallation if needed. Just remember to keep regular backups of your data; it's super important!
