I'm planning to move onto a canal boat, and I'm not really savvy with PCs. I have a prebuilt computer with a 500 W 80+ Gold PSU, but since the boat will be off-grid, I'll need a generator or solar panels to keep the batteries charged. Given that power can cut out abruptly, I'm wondering if I should invest in a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) for my setup. If I do need one, I wouldn't even know where to start looking for the right type. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated!

Honestly, why not just go for a laptop? It’s basically a built-in UPS, and while it won’t give you the best FPS for gaming like a desktop might, it uses a lot less power and would be way more practical on a boat.
If you're concerned about power cutting out, a UPS is a smart move. It gives you that buffer to properly shut down your system when the power goes. You don't want your PC crashing unexpectedly when you're in the middle of something important.
I lived on a sailboat for six years, and I totally recommend having a UPS. It’s nice to have that battery backup, and it helps protect your PC during sudden power outages. Not strictly necessary, but better safe than sorry!
Keep in mind, charging your PC with solar is tricky. You might need at least three 450W panels to keep up with a 500W PSU, and they can underperform if dirty or blocked. If you’re set on a desktop, think about a large battery setup. Otherwise, a laptop is way easier to manage on a boat!
I think getting a UPS might not be the best long-term solution. Have you considered a LiFePo battery setup? It can provide enough power for your PC and has the option to integrate solar charging, which makes it more efficient for off-grid living.

Just remember to grab a good DC-DC charge controller for the LiFePo battery, so everything stays charged properly.
