Trouble with Windows 11 Update and Major Data Loss

Hey everyone! I recently tried to update my computer to Windows 11 since it meets all the requirements. Unfortunately, about a few weeks ago, my computer restarted and attempted the update overnight, but it failed. To my horror, it rolled back to a state from nine months ago and wiped everything off my desktop. I looked everywhere but couldn't find any backup folders or previous restore points. Some files were backed up, but I tragically lost a significant amount of data that I hadn't secured elsewhere.

Then, just today, my wife's computer went through the same ordeal, trying to update to Windows 11 and ending up in the exact same situation! Our hard drives were also partitioned, and it reverted those changes, too, basically rendering our computers useless. We reached out to Microsoft support, but they claimed they had never seen this issue before, which is honestly frustrating.

Has anyone else experienced this? Just a heads up, be careful with these updates and make sure you're not caught off guard like we were!

I've never heard of this kind of issue before either. My best guess is that perhaps one of your components wasn’t quite up to spec for Windows 11, leading it to revert back to a previous state where everything was thought to be fine.

Yeah, I totally get that! But I kinda don't remember how to create a restore point anymore; it keeps prompting me to use OneDrive for backups. Any tips?

Wow, that sounds really frustrating! I haven’t encountered anything like this personally, but I think it might be due to your system's disk setup or BIOS settings. Always double-check your backups before making significant updates to prevent data loss. Good luck!
