Should I Return My 64GB RAM for a 32GB Faster Option?

Hey folks, I'm building my first PC and I currently have 64GB of DDR5 RAM at 5600MHz. I got a great deal on it, but I've been doing some digging and I keep hearing that 6000MHz is considered the sweet spot for my CPU. Now I'm thinking about switching things up and getting 32GB of DDR5 RAM at 6000MHz instead. I've heard some chatter that 64GB might be excessive for most tasks.

I'm using this build mostly for 4K video editing and casual gaming with friends, rather than for competitive gaming. Do you think it's worth going through the hassle of returning my RAM for a new one? Would I notice a significant improvement with the 6000MHz option? I'd only save about $60 to $100 by switching down to 32GB. Thanks for any insights!

If gaming is more of a casual thing for you and you're focused on productivity, having more RAM would definitely help. Just keep in mind that for AMD CPUs, 6000MHz CL30 is ideal. Be cautious about the timings if you do decide to switch—it’s easy to end up with slower speeds!

Gotcha! I’ll keep an eye out for that if I make a change.

Honestly, I don't think switching to 32GB will be worth it. For your 4K editing, you might end up needing all that extra RAM. Plus, if you're not into competitive gaming, 64GB could be beneficial for productivity. It really just depends on how you plan to use your system in the long run!

Latency plays a huge role here, and jumping from 5600MHz to 6000MHz might only yield marginal gains. In fact, your 5600 RAM could potentially be overclocked to match the 6000 speed. If your current RAM has decent timings (like CL26-28), it’s worth keeping. On the other hand, if your timings are higher, upgrading could be beneficial for gaming. Also, given the current RAM prices, you might want to consider going for even higher-end RAM if you plan to future-proof your setup further.

Thanks for breaking that down! Makes me think twice about the switch.

With your X3D CPU, the benefits of faster RAM might be smaller since that CPU has extra cache that helps reduce RAM dependency. Also, some games can utilize more RAM these days, so it's generally better to have more now rather than worry about upgrading later, especially with DDR5. Just keep an eye on the compatibility of running 4 sticks if you go that route.
