Hey everyone! A while back, I got a prebuilt HP Omen gaming desktop with some impressive specs: an AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, 64GB of RAM, and an Nvidia Geforce RTX 3080 Ti. Unfortunately, my GPU has broken down, and I'm at a crossroads about whether to simply replace the graphics card or build a whole new PC. I'm not really leaning towards a prebuilt again if I decide on just upgrading the GPU. I mostly game on a 4K monitor and I don't care too much about raytracing; I just want smooth graphics without jaggies. Games like Anno, X4, and Expedition 33 are my jam. Right now, I'm looking at the 5070 Ti and 9070 XT, but I'm wondering if my current setup will bottleneck these new GPUs. Is the 5900X still good enough? And are there any specific considerations for changing the GPU, especially since my rig is a prebuilt from HP? Thanks for any tips!

Your Ryzen 9 5900X is definitely still a solid processor for 4K gaming! When playing most games, especially RPGs like Expedition 33, they tend to be more GPU-dependent at those resolutions, so you should be all set with the new GPUs you're considering. Just keep in mind that some titles could benefit from a slightly better CPU, but overall you won’t be bottlenecked dramatically.

Thanks a lot! What type of games are you thinking about that would see improvements from a better CPU?
