Why do videos and pictures look blurry on my new 27″ 2K monitor?

Hey everyone! I recently purchased a 27-inch 2K (1440p) monitor and it looks fantastic for desktops—text and UI are sharp and clear. I've made sure my drivers are updated and the resolution is set to 2560x1440, with HDR enabled. However, I'm running into a problem: when I watch videos or view pictures, they appear blurry or low-quality. For instance, a 1080p video on YouTube looks as though it's 480p, and photos seem muddy. I've tried multiple browsers and video players, but the problem persists. Sometimes when I check the HDR settings, it says "HDR unavailable" or "something went wrong." Also, Windows Update keeps suggesting I need a newer version of Windows, but everything shows it's up to date. I'm wondering if this could be a Windows or HDR bug, an issue with video scaling or color profiles, or if others have experienced similar problems with their 2K monitors. Any advice would be greatly appreciated since I was really looking forward to this upgrade!

This issue is often overlooked with 1440p monitors. The scaling can lead to poor media quality, especially when viewing lower-res content. Videos like 1080p can look pretty bad on a 1440p screen because of this integer scaling problem. It's not just you!

I feel you! I just want my YouTube videos to look good, like 720p should be nice, not look like it's 240p.

When you step up in resolution, it can be hard to go back. I grew up with lower quality formats and now I can barely watch anything with lower quality. Just a heads up that it’s a common experience.

I have the same monitor, and I don’t see these issues. Is the problem with all content or just lower-resolution videos? If you play games at 1440p, do they look clear? Also, try turning off HDR to see if that helps.

Just a point of clarification, 2K is often specified as 2048/1920x1080 while 1440p should be labeled as 2.5K or QHD. The 2560x1440 resolution being called 2K can be really confusing, and it might be contributing to the mixed messages around quality.
