Choosing Between Motherboard and Cooler for My New Build

Hey everyone,

I'm building my first desktop PC in over a decade! After using a ROG laptop for a while, I finally decided to invest in a custom setup. I've spent the last year keeping an eye on prices for components and recently bought a 9800X3D processor and a TUF 5070ti OC graphics card.

As a web developer and digital marketer, I frequently use programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. I also do some video editing and engage in heavy multitasking with tons of tabs open, all while enjoying some gaming in my downtime. I wanted to treat myself but didn't want to go all out with a 9950X3D or 5090.

I'm leaning towards the Strix X870E-E motherboard, as I'm a bit of an ROG fan, but I'm also considering the TUF B850 Plus. For cooling, I want to go with an AIO for aesthetics, as I've usually opted for air coolers in the past. I've watched many videos and read a lot about coolers, particularly the Arctic LF3 Pro and the Corsair Nautilus 360 RS. However, I've learned there are compatibility issues with the Arctic cooler and the Strix board.

I've read that Corsair fans can be louder than Arctic ones. Given that I often wear a headset while gaming, would the noise level be a concern? Should I go with the B850 and LF3 Pro, or the X870E and Nautilus? I plan to top mount it in a Lian Li 216. It's frustrating that Arctic needs to send me alternative heatsinks for such a premium board. I've been mulling this over for a week and would really appreciate your insights. Thanks!

I totally feel you on the cooler choice! If you're set on the Strix, just be aware that the Arctic LF3 Pro might require some extra work with the heatsinks, which can be annoying for a higher-end board. The Corsair Nautilus will give you reliable performance, but yes, it can be a bit louder. Since you’re using a headset, that might not matter much. However, if you want to avoid complications altogether, the TUF B850 Plus and the Arctic cooler could be the safer choice. It’s about what features and looks are more important to you!

If you're looking to treat yourself while sticking to a reasonable budget, the Strix X870E-E is definitely a great choice for ROG fans. But I get your frustration about the compatibility issues with the Arctic LF3 Pro. The Corsair Nautilus 360 RS is a solid alternative, even if it’s a bit louder. Since you wear headphones a lot, the noise shouldn’t be a big deal for you. The TUF B850 Plus is also a reliable option with better compatibility for the Arctic cooler, which might offer you more peace of mind. It ultimately depends on how much you value ROG aesthetics versus getting a cooler that fits without headaches.
