What Should I Consider When Choosing a Wi-Fi Card?

Hey everyone! I've had my computer tower up and running for quite some time now, and I want to upgrade it by adding a Wi-Fi card. I've mainly used Ethernet or a Wi-Fi dongle in the past, but due to my current living situation, Ethernet isn't an option. My dongle connects me to what is supposedly high-speed internet, showing over 100mbps download and 50mbps upload on speed tests. Still, I face constant desyncs in all my online games.

To fix this, I'm looking to replace my dongle with a dedicated Wi-Fi card. My motherboard is a b550 gaming x v2, and I'm aware that anything PCIe x1 or higher will fit. However, I'm unsure about how to choose the right card, especially when considering options like Wi-Fi 6 versus Wi-Fi 7. I'm not extremely tech-savvy and could really use some guidance! My budget is around $100, which I think should be enough for a decent card.

First off, you should check what type of router you have since that’ll help determine if you need Wi-Fi 6, 6E, or 7. To get the best performance, I’d recommend a PCIe card that features an Intel chip. An option like the AX210 is a solid bet for Wi-Fi 6.

Thanks for the tip! I didn't realize the router made such a difference.

Just to add, even if you move to a place with Wi-Fi 7, a Wi-Fi 6 card will still work, though you won’t get the full benefits.

Ultimately, the chip on the Wi-Fi card is what you should prioritize. Intel cards are highly regarded. The Intel AX210 for Wi-Fi 6E is great, but the BE200 for Wi-Fi 7 has some compatibility issues with AMD platforms, so keep that in mind. If your router supports Wi-Fi 6, you’ll be fine with an AX210.

Thanks! That really helps clear things up.
