Why Does My HP Monitor Keep Turning Off?

I'm using an HP Elite One computer with an older HP flat monitor running on Windows 11. At first, the monitor worked perfectly, but it suddenly started showing a message suggesting I set it to 1680 x 1050 at 60Hz, even though it was originally set to 1920 x 1080. After about a minute, the screen would shut off. I tried adjusting the settings and verified the refresh rate (which was at 59.9Hz), but the issue persisted. I've also unplugged the monitor and restarted the computer without any luck. I found some advice online about changing sleep settings, but I'm not sure where to look for that in Windows or on the monitor itself. Any ideas?

This sounds less like a sleep issue and more like a problem with the cable, monitor, or the video output jack on your computer. Have you tried swapping the cable? An HDMI to DVI might not be the best connection, especially if the monitor is a bit older. It's possible it's just not handling the 1920x1080 resolution well and is defaulting to a lower one.

Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll look into the cable. The monitor is pretty rough around the edges, so maybe it’s time to think about replacing it.

Make sure to check the model and manufacturing date on the monitor's back. Older models might not support higher resolutions like 1920x1080 consistently. Also, ensure your graphics drivers are updated, and that you're not using any adapters that could be causing compatibility issues.

I planned to check the model when I get back. The ports are pretty dated—just VGA and DVI. It's strange because it was working fine for most of the day...
