Need Help: My Computer is Unusable and I’m Out of Ideas

I've been using my computer for about 10 years now, and it started as an Alienware rig that's now undergone so many upgrades that none of the original parts remain. Recently, I replaced the RAM and my oldest SSD (the one with Windows). I thought upgrading to Windows 11 would help, but I'm still facing tons of issues. Over the past 6-8 months, it's gotten progressively worse, and now my computer is nearly unusable ever since an update last Thursday. I'm dealing with constant gray screens and crashes. The computer is incredibly slow at startup and even just using applications. It takes anywhere from 10-30 minutes to boot up with a fresh install of Windows 11 on a brand new SSD. Apps, video games, and even Chrome lag terribly, and I'm getting frequent freezes. I've run disk checks, compatibility tests, and used sfc/scan now. I've also checked for malware but found nothing. I'm at my wits' end and would love some guidance before I resort to a full clean install, which I'm hesitant about because I have important files I can't easily access. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like you've been through a lot already. Have you tried checking your BIOS settings? Sometimes changes there can fix performance issues. Also, consider doing that clean install; I know it's daunting, but a fresh start could really help. Just make sure to back up your important files first! It might take a bit of time, but it’s worth it if you want to get your system running smoothly again.

Did you recently upgrade any parts around the time your problems started? It's good to rule out any hardware issues. If everything has been fine till now, you might just need to bite the bullet and do the clean install. It's your best bet to restore your system to normal.

If you upgraded parts recently, just double-check their compatibility. If everything checks out, maybe try reseating your RAM and SSDs—sometimes a loose connection can cause crazy slowdowns. And don't sweat the clean install; taking the time to back everything up safely will pay off in the long run!

I feel your pain! If the clean install is what's holding you back, you could try booting into safe mode. That might give you easier access to your files so you can back them up before wiping everything. It's also a good way to test if the system still has those issues; sometimes, they stem from software conflicts that don’t show up in safe mode.
