I've come across both an RTX 4070 and an RX 7800 XT at the same price, and I'm struggling to decide which one to buy. I currently game at 1080p but might upgrade to 1440p soon. The 4070 has 12GB of VRAM, which makes me a bit uneasy. However, I know I'd need to get another 8-pin cable for the 7800 XT. I've also heard that FSR 3 isn't as good as DLSS, which I've been using on my GTX 2060. Any advice would be great!

The RX 7800 XT performs better in rasterization but struggles with ray tracing compared to the 4070. FSR 3 isn’t great, but if you’re okay fiddling with settings, you can get FSR 4 to work, which actually holds its own against DLSS. If the 12GB VRAM concerns you, the 7800 XT might be the better bet. If ray tracing and upscaling ease are important, go with the 4070.
FSR 4 being on par with DLSS is a stretch. It's mainly a small step up from FSR 3.
The 4070 is a solid choice. The difference in performance at native rendering is minor, usually within 10%. Plus, Nvidia's DLSS is way ahead of FSR considering you might use it.
I'd definitely choose the 4070. It outshines the 7800 XT in almost every aspect—DLSS, ray tracing, performance in general—especially for the same price.
At 1440p, I’m using 12GB of VRAM fine! VRAM isn’t your limiting factor—frame rates usually drop first. I suggest going for whatever has the most overhead if they’re the same price. Personally, I'd lean towards the 7800 XT, as I generally prefer raw performance over ray tracing.
I’m a bit biased because I use Linux, but I think the RX 7800 XT is a great choice for you if ray tracing isn’t a big deal.
To be honest, I'm gaming at 1440p with a 4060. Sometimes I dial down settings or optimize DLSS. With a 4070, I'd stay at 1440p and never look back at 1080p.
The 7800 XT is solid, but everyone's praising the 4070 for a reason. If you really want maximum potential, go with the 4070.
Nah, that's just your bias showing!
Honestly, for that price point, the 7800 XT isn’t a smart choice. The additional VRAM doesn’t significantly matter at 1080p. The 4070 gives you better overall value with its features and performance.

Just a heads up, FSR 3 looks decent at 4K. If you're sticking with 1080p, neither GPU will really need DLSS or FSR. At 1440p, though, you have to weigh extra VRAM against DLSS.
