Why Do I Keep Running Out of Memory on My Mac Mini?

I'm transitioning from Windows to Mac and currently testing out a Mac Mini M1 with 8GB of RAM. Lately, I've been encountering frequent memory issues where the system runs out of memory, leading to the "Force Quit Applications" window appearing and pausing some apps. The main culprits seem to be JetBrains Rider, which uses between 8-12GB of RAM, and Mozilla Firefox, which can consume 20-30GB at times.

I know this demand exceeds the 8GB physical RAM available, and I believe Mac OS is utilizing swap space. My question is about the swap file: doesn't it dynamically resize? I have about 250GB free on my system drive, so why is the swap file not adapting to meet my usage needs? Is there a way to improve memory handling during swapping? Furthermore, is there an upper limit to how much the swap file can grow? I plan on upgrading to a Mac with either 32GB or 48GB of RAM, but I want to understand why this memory issue is occurring and whether it will persist with a more powerful machine.

You're right; the swap is resizing, but even when it does, if you're pushing memory usage so high, it can seem like things are frozen because it has to swap constantly. Essentially, when those apps are using more RAM than what's physically available, it causes a significant drop in performance. You might want to consider reducing the number of tabs in Firefox or switching to a lighter browser like Safari. It's crazy how much memory modern browsers and IDEs can chew up. Investing in that upgrade when you switch your laptop will definitely help!

It sounds like your current setup just isn’t cutting it for those applications. While the swap does dynamically resize, it seems like your memory usage is outpacing what the system can handle. Both Rider and Firefox are pretty memory-hungry, so when you try to run them simultaneously, it's a recipe for trouble. You might want to look into optimizing those apps to use less RAM if possible. Unfortunately, with only 8GB, you're likely to struggle regardless of how the swap file operates.

Exactly! The dynamic resizing of the swap might not be fast enough to keep up with your memory demands, leading the OS to think apps are frozen. Firefox especially can be a memory hog, especially with multiple active tabs. It might benefit you to find a way to manage your open tabs or even look into alternatives. Also, for your next laptop, make sure you get enough RAM to keep up with your workload – it will save you a lot of headaches!
