Hey everyone! I recently upgraded my sister's system from Ubuntu 18.04 to Xubunto 24.03, thinking it would be a safer move for her. I backed up all her data and created a bootable USB stick to install Xubunto. After the installation was complete, I rebooted the system, but now it doesn't recognize the hard drive at all! I can only boot into the live system from the USB stick. I tried using GParted and it still shows the hard drive, but when I tried to directly access it during boot, I encountered a parity error or something like that. I really don't want to have messed things up for her. Any advice on how to recover the hard drive? I'd really appreciate it!

I’m not super tech-savvy, but I’ve heard about the MBR to GPT changes too. It might also help to check if the BIOS recognizes the hard drive at all. If it doesn’t show up there, you might be dealing with a hardware issue rather than a software one. It sounds like you might have switched the hard drive type from MBR to GPT during installation without adjusting the motherboard settings. This can definitely cause recognition issues. Make sure your BIOS or UEFI settings match the partition table type you’re using. If your drive is GPT, your motherboard needs to support UEFI boot. Try changing those settings and see if that helps!
