I did a system update and upgrade through the terminal last night, and now my screen is just black when I try to boot up. I have very sensitive passwords and other important data that I need to recover. Is there a way to use a flash drive or something similar to get my data back?

If you manage to boot from a live USB, consider restoring your last Timeshift snapshot if you created one before the update. It might help you recover your system without losing any data!
Have you tried pressing Ctrl + Alt + F3 to see if you can get to a login prompt? Sometimes that's a workaround to access your system.
You can try booting from a live USB image, like Ubuntu or Linux Mint. This method often allows you to access your hard drive and recover your files easily.
