Accidentally Broke GPU Clip – Should I Be Worried?

I was almost done assembling my wife's computer when I accidentally broke the GPU clip while trying to install it. The GPU seems too thick for another slot, and now the rig won't POST; the indicator light turns on briefly for the DRAM and then switches to the GPU, but nothing appears on the monitor. Have I damaged the motherboard from breaking the clip?

UPDATE: After some troubleshooting, I discovered the issue was actually with my monitor, which is not turning on. It looks like the motherboard was just giving an error light because of the faulty monitor. Once I connected a working monitor, the system posted correctly!

Are you sure it’s broken? Some of those clips are removable. I thought mine was damaged, but I was able to click it back into place and it worked just fine.

The clip isn't a critical component. Just make sure the GPU is fully seated in the slot. Sometimes, if the case is misaligned, it can pull the GPU out slightly, which might cause issues. If your CPU has integrated graphics, try booting without the GPU to see if that helps.

You should be fine without that clip, as long as the GPU is fully inserted and the gold connections are not visible. Make sure it's secured and plugged in properly. If you can, share some pictures to get better advice!

I broke my clip while swapping GPUs too, and my system has been running smoothly for years after that.

Just to update everyone, it turned out the problem was with the monitor, not the motherboard. Once I switched to a different monitor, everything worked perfectly!
