I'm looking to upgrade my very old PC soon and I'm torn between two options. My current setup includes an i9 9900k CPU and an RTX 1070 GPU. I mostly play CPU-intensive competitive games, especially Arc Raiders. I'm planning to upgrade both components within this year, but I need to decide which one to tackle first to get the best performance boost for the time being. Should I upgrade to a 7800x3d CPU or focus on getting a new GPU?

I have an i7 9700 with a 9070 XT GPU (previously GTX 1650) and it runs Battlefield 6 fine, but I feel the CPU is the bottleneck. Still, I think you're better off changing the GPU for now.
I recommend upgrading your GPU first. It's likely to give you a more noticeable performance boost right away. For instance, the RX 9060 XT 16GB is a solid choice at around $380. It'll handle modern games much better than your current 1070.
Definitely go for the GPU upgrade first! The improvement will be significant.
As long as your i9-9900k stays cool, it’ll hold up for a bit longer. Upgrading the GPU seems like the more beneficial option right now.
