Is it worth investing in a high-end CPU if I’m using a 9070XT?

I'm looking for help choosing a CPU to pair with my AMD 9070XT GPU. I plan to use my PC for mostly light office tasks (around 80% of the time) but I also want to game about 20% of the time. My main interest is competitive gaming, particularly in titles where high FPS is crucial, like Marvel Rivals, and I'll be playing at 1440p.

I've heard that the AMD 9800X3D and 7600X show similar FPS when matched with the 9070XT, which makes me wonder if opting for a high-end CPU is really worth it. I do appreciate that the non-X3D CPUs are usually more efficient and can perform quite well in productivity tasks. What do you all think I should go for?

Some games really rely more on the GPU, while others might need a better CPU. If you’re playing at 1440p, the 7600X should perform well enough with your setup, as Marvel Rivals won't push it too hard. So you shouldn't worry about bottlenecking at that resolution.

In competitive games like Marvel Rivals, the GPU is going to be your limiting factor at 1440p. The FPS will likely look similar between CPUs, but if you go for a stronger CPU now, it may provide headroom for future games that might be more demanding. Consider a higher-end CPU if your budget allows it, but the 7600X is perfectly fine for now.

What CPU would you recommend then, if you're looking for something more robust?

Here's a comparison that might help you decide: [CPU Benchmark Comparison](https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/6199vs6590vs7041vs6249/AMD-Ryzen-5-9600X-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-9600-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-7500X3D-6-Core-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-7600X3D). For productivity tasks, the 9600/X chips could be better, but for gaming, the X3D options hold the edge due to their enhanced cache. If you do quite a bit of productivity as well, something like a 9700X could also be a good fit.

When playing games at higher resolutions, the GPU becomes the primary performance factor, much more so than the CPU. It really depends on the specific games you want to play. If you're focused on competitive eSports and don’t care much about graphics quality, an X3D chip could be a good choice, but for your needs, the 7600X should work just fine.

I'll definitely check out some more videos on this topic. Thanks for the tip!

At 1440p, most games will be GPU-limited, which is why you see similar FPS between CPUs like the 9800X3D and 7600X. The difference might be noticeable in 1% or 0.1% low performance metrics though. If you can afford it, and you're planning to play games that could benefit from it, consider the 7800X3D for a good performance boost without going for the priciest option.
