Feeling Stuck in My IT Career After a Year—Any Advice?

Hey everyone, I'm really feeling stuck in my IT career after about a year. I've been working mostly in Linux and Windows environments, but the work I've been assigned is becoming frustrating. I genuinely enjoy Linux because it aligns with my development background, but my current tasks are repetitive and basically manual labor—like making calls to users for confirmations before making even the simplest changes. It feels mind-numbing. To make matters worse, my pay is quite low, and the long commute adds to my stress and fatigue. I notice I'm becoming lazier and more depressed. I know I should be upskilling or looking for better roles, maybe in DevOps or Cloud, but mentally I'm drained. Has anyone faced a similar slump in their early career? How did you manage to break through it when you felt completely stuck? I could really use some encouragement or advice. Thanks for reading!

Honestly, if you're feeling this way after just one year, it might be a sign that this role isn't for you. You need to actively work on improving your situation instead of just sitting in frustration. It's tough, but many of us have been through similar early struggles. You should be proactive—take charge of your career!

Exactly! It's not just about showing up; you've got to put in the work to advance.

One year in is usually all about grunt work. If you're feeling bored, why not try automating some of the tedious tasks? Stand out from the crowd! Good things don't just come to those who wait—they come to those who put in the effort. Consider getting some certifications that spark your interest; it can really help boost your career. Keep pushing forward!

Haha, are you 27 years old or 47 years old with that advice?

Hey man, sounds like this job just isn't the right fit for you. It's totally okay to look for something else that suits your skills better. Remember, you only feel stuck if you let yourself stay that way!

Appreciate that, I really needed to hear it!

Try to find ways to make your current role engaging. Automate repetitive tasks where you can and use your Linux skills to bring some innovation to your current work. If you’re too unhappy, don’t hesitate to look for jobs that align more with your interests.

You've just started; it's normal to go through this phase. Learn what you can, keep a home lab setup, and keep improving your skills. Just because you’re not dealing with complex tasks right now doesn’t mean you won’t in the future. Stick it out a little longer, and you’ll gather enough experience to move on!

Right! Jumping ship too early could be a mistake.
