Is a Chromebook a good choice for programming and studying?

I'm considering buying a Chromebook primarily for tasks like learning programming in C++ and Python, taking online classes, studying, and watching educational content. I'm also delving into AI/ML courses and generative AI topics. Aside from that, I'd be using it for everyday tasks like watching YouTube and movies. I'm looking at a Chromebook with these specs: Intel i3 13th gen, 8GB DDR5X RAM, and 256GB storage. Do you think these specifications are sufficient for all the activities I mentioned? I could really use some insights on this!

The specs you're looking at aren't necessarily a deal-breaker, but keep in mind that 8GB RAM is a bit on the low side. Most machines I've dealt with in the last decade have at least 16GB. Chromebooks can run a standard Linux setup, but that adds a layer of complexity to get everything working like a regular PC.

I wouldn't recommend a Chromebook for programming. It might be better to go with a cheap or used Windows laptop, as they tend to handle programming tasks more efficiently.

Why do you think that? Isn’t it possible to run a Linux environment on a Chromebook?
