Thinking About Switching to Linux: Will My Favorite Games Work?

I'm really considering making the switch to Linux because I've been having issues with Windows bricking a lot of my games. However, I'd like to keep using several applications, such as Roblox Player and Studio, Discord, Minecraft Bedrock Edition, Helldivers 2, and The First Descendant.

I've read mixed things about these games on Linux, and I'm unsure if they'll work or what challenges I might face. I've been recommended Linux Mint and Zorin, but I'm open to other options. Any insights or advice would be super helpful!

For Minecraft, I'd strongly recommend going for the Java edition instead of Bedrock. If you need to play Bedrock, just know you'll have to buy it on the Play Store for an Android device first—it's a bit complicated. But overall, Mint or Zorin are great starting points for a smooth experience in Linux!

I can vouch for Minecraft Java on Linux! It runs smoothly and has plenty of support.

Roblox isn't officially supported on Linux since the devs made it tricky. However, you can get it running using Sober. As for the other games, Helldivers 2 should work fine since it’s on ProtonDB. I'd also suggest checking out the Flathub packages for extra help if you face issues with installation. Linux Mint is a solid choice for beginners!

For gaming, Discord works perfectly on Linux, both the desktop and web versions. As for your other games, Helldivers 2 and The First Descendant have been rated as "gold" on ProtonDB, meaning they should run smoothly with Proton, which translates Windows games to Linux.

Minecraft Bedrock might be trickier because it doesn't run natively, but there’s an unofficial port you can use. Roblox can run through a tool called Sober, but you might need to do some setup. Overall, with a bit of tweaking, you can likely get all your games working. Just make sure to dual boot as a backup in case you run into issues!

I’ve heard that Sober works pretty well for Roblox, but it might take some experimenting to get it just right.

I have experience with most of the games you mentioned. Discord runs great on Linux, and both Helldivers 2 and The First Descendant are compatible. For Minecraft Bedrock, your best bet might be to look for unofficial setups, as it doesn’t run through Proton. Meanwhile, you can easily run Minecraft Java, which actually performs better on Linux. I recommend starting with either Mint or Zorin since they’re user-friendly!

Don’t forget about using the Prism Launcher for Minecraft—it supports mods and shaders!
