Can My PC Download Files Directly to Disk Like My Friend’s?

I've been struggling with slow download speeds because my roommates have friends over all the time, making the Wi-Fi pretty slow—around 1 MB per second, sometimes even less. A friend of mine seems to be downloading files at an incredible speed, like 1 GB per second, and they mentioned their PC uses a disk for that. Is it possible to download files directly to the disk instead of relying solely on Wi-Fi? If anyone has tips on how to achieve faster downloads or if I'm misunderstanding something, I'd really appreciate the help!

Your friend's impressive speeds might be due to them using a wired Ethernet connection, which is usually faster and more stable compared to Wi-Fi. All computers will use the disk (HDD or SSD) to save files, but the speed of the internet connection is what ultimately determines how fast files download. If you can, try connecting your PC directly to the router with a cable, which might help.

It sounds like there might be a bit of confusion here. When you download something, it’s going from the internet to your computer, usually through Wi-Fi or an Ethernet cable. Once it's transferred, it gets stored on your hard drive or SSD, which is likely what you’re referring to as the disk. You can’t really "use the disk" to download—you need a network connection to get the file initially. Your friend probably has a faster internet connection or is wired directly to the router.

What your friend likely demonstrated is transferring files from an external hard drive rather than downloading them from the internet. This is much faster because the data is right there, rather than traveling over Wi-Fi. If you’re looking for faster downloads, you might want to ask your friend if you can borrow their external drive or see if they can send you files directly.

It’s worth checking if your friend has a NAS (Network Attached Storage) device or a Plex server set up at home. This setup allows them to download content ahead of time when the internet speed is better, and then access it anytime from their local network without heavy reliance on their internet speed!

In the past, we used to install software directly from disks like CDs or DVDs. Nowadays, most things are downloaded over the internet. If you have access to someone with a faster connection, they can download the files and then transfer them to you via USB drive or an external hard drive. That way, you're not stuck waiting for slow downloads!
