How can I stop Windows from rolling back my Intel graphics driver?

I've been struggling with an annoying issue where Windows keeps reverting my Intel graphics driver back to an outdated version (26.xx from 2020) every time I restart or shut down my laptop. This happens a few times after I reinstall the latest driver (31.xx from 2022). The old version causes my laptop to glitch, freeze, or even go black, leading to losing work because I often have to force shutdown. I've tried disabling driver updates from the registry, but it didn't help. I really need a way to stop this from happening – any suggestions?

Make sure you're actually uninstalling the old 26.xx version, or else Windows will keep reinstalling it. The idea is to select the version you want from Device Manager. If the previous version is still there, Windows might just roll back automatically.

Manually choosing your driver in Device Manager should do the job. Alternatively, consider using Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to help block those updates. It’s very effective for situations like yours.

You might want to try using the Intel Driver & Support Assistant. It's a handy tool that can help keep your drivers updated, but if Windows is just rolling back automatically, that's a pain!

I use that too, but it's still not solving the problem. It just notifies me when it rolls back. I’ve heard manually selecting the driver in Device Manager could do the trick, so maybe I’ll give that a shot.

There are multiple ways to block updates via the registry, you know? If you haven't tried blocking the update for the driver by its Hardware ID, that might be worth looking into. Just search for how to do that!
