What Job Titles Should I Consider with My DevOps Experience?

I've been working at an AWS Ops Center for two years where I mostly monitored and managed alerts through CloudWatch. Recently, I was given AWS Admin rights, which allowed me to grant or deny access to developers for instances and databases while they deployed their code. However, I don't have a coding background and feel underqualified for applying to DevOps positions. Are there other job titles I can apply for that focus more on monitoring? Additionally, would it be valuable to learn to create alerts? What titles would fit what I've been doing? Should I consider learning coding since I now understand how CI/CD works?

You might want to look into positions like 'Cloud Ops' or junior roles in sites like SRE (Site Reliability Engineer). Those roles often involve monitoring and executing runbooks. The downside is there aren’t many of those jobs, and they can sometimes be a dead end if they don't involve building infrastructure. I suggest aiming for junior/entry-level DevOps engineering roles instead.

Have you thought about roles like SRE or SysAdmin? They're good fits for your experience and usually don't require extensive coding skills at entry-level.

Junior DevOps or Junior SysAdmin could be great starting points for you. Just be aware that these titles often expect some knowledge of scripting and CI/CD processes. I recommend building a simple app and a Jenkins pipeline at home to boost your skills.

Great advice! By 'sample app,' do you mean I should use AWS resources like EC2 instances? I’d love to set up a home lab!

Exactly! Setting up a basic environment at home can really help you enhance your skills and confidence.

You're actually more qualified for DevOps roles than you might think! Your experience with access control, CloudWatch monitoring, and Jenkins jobs is super relevant. Check out Cloud Ops, SRE associate, or junior platform support positions. Learning a bit of scripting can definitely help long-term, but you already have a solid foundation. You may find positions that don’t strictly require coding.

Thanks! That gives me more confidence. I’ll keep looking and maybe pick up some scripting in my free time.

That’s really motivating to hear! I’ll also take a look at those titles you mentioned.
