Getting a BSOD on Startup After Switching to a New PC with Old SSD

Hey folks,

I recently built a new PC and transferred my storage from my old setup. I installed my old SSD and when I boot it up, I keep hitting this BSOD. I'm not sure how to resolve the issue, especially since the only part reused is the storage. I also made the switch from Intel to AMD, which makes me wonder if that's part of the problem. Here's the stop code I'm getting: SYSTEM_THREAD EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED, and it mentions that stornvme.sys failed. Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks!

Others say you can't just boot another PC's Windows install, which isn't entirely true—you can, but there are caveats. Given your error, SYSTEM_THREAD EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED, this is likely a driver issue due to the hardware switch. I suggest trying to boot into Safe Mode first if you can. If it boots correctly with generic drivers, you'll need to install the appropriate drivers for your new AMD hardware. If not, you might need to reinstall Windows using a USB.

It looks like switching from Intel to AMD has likely messed up your Windows installation settings. You can definitely transfer a Windows installation from one PC to another, but in this case, the best course of action would probably be to back up your data and perform a fresh Windows reinstallation. This way, you can ensure that all the drivers are correctly configured for your new setup.

To diagnose the BSOD, you should try getting the dump files from your system. If you can boot into Windows normally or through Safe Mode, check for files in C:WindowsMinidump. If you find any, zip them up and upload to a file sharing site that works for you. Multiple dump files are better for analysis, but if you don’t have many, that’s okay; just upload what you can. You might also want to follow the guide on modifying the dump settings to create Small Memory Dumps, which will help capture the necessary info for troubleshooting.

If you're having issues getting into boot mode, you're not alone. I ran into problems like that. You’ve mentioned getting a message about 'New CPU installed' and fTPM errors, which complicate things. Try resetting the fTPM by selecting 'Y,' but be cautious if you have BitLocker enabled. This could be causing the BSOD, so see if resetting helps. If it doesn’t, and you still can’t boot, you might need to consider a clean Windows installation.
