I recently fixed up my old Dell Inspiron N5010, which has a first-generation i5 and currently 4 GB of RAM. I'm thinking of upgrading to 8 GB soon, but for now, I want to know which Linux distribution would run smoothly and look nice on it. I'm considering whether to go with this or stick with Windows 10 instead.

I recommend checking out the distro selection page online for more tailored options. Just remember to take regular backups, try things in a virtual machine, and make sure you understand commands before hitting Enter!
For a lightweight option, try Debian with Fluxbox as your window manager. It saves resources and still feels snappy. Lubuntu is great too if you're leaning towards Ubuntu.
Zorin Lite and Lubuntu are also excellent choices! With 8 GB of RAM, you could even comfortably use full-fledged distros if you want.
If you're sticking with 4 GB of RAM for now, plain Mint with the Cinnamon desktop is a good fit! It runs beautifully even on older machines like yours.
You should try Linux Mint with the XFCE edition or Bodhi Linux 7.0. Both are great choices for older hardware and should run smoothly on your laptop.
