Thinking of Switching to Linux from Windows 11: What Should I Know?

Hey everyone,

I've been feeling frustrated with Windows 11 and I'm seriously considering a switch to Linux. The last time I used Linux was back in 2010 with Ubuntu, so I'm pretty out of the loop. I was thinking it might be a good idea to start by running a VM to test things out before going all in. I use my desktop for gaming and light school work, so I need something that will cater to both. Is Ubuntu still a solid choice? What VM software would you recommend? Also, it would be great to hear about any challenges you faced during your transition to Linux.

Thanks for your advice!

I switched from Windows to Linux back in June and honestly, I haven’t looked back since! The transition was pretty smooth for me. If you can run a VM, give it a shot first, but once you're comfortable, I recommend installing it directly on hardware for the best experience! Additionally, have you thought about which Linux distribution you'd want to use? There are many options to consider.

Absolutely! I can't believe how much smoother my workflow has been since ditching Windows. It's good to have a lightweight environment while also having your gaming setup intact.

What distro did you go for in the end?

I really recommend trying out Fedora with the KDE Plasma desktop. I made the jump from Windows 10 to Linux, and KDE made it really easy for me. You can install Windows in a VM if you need it for specific apps but isolate it from your main environment. It can help with security, too!

Good choice! KDE is great for a smooth transition. I set up a similar desktop for a friend transitioning from Windows and they loved it.

I had Fedora crash on me during my experience. Now I'm on Manjaro, and it’s been a lot more stable for everyday use.

Ubuntu is still a solid choice, but if you're looking for something a bit more user-friendly, you might want to check out Zorin OS or Pop!_OS. They have interfaces that resemble Windows, making it a lot easier to adapt. Try using VirtualBox for your VM setup; it’s pretty straightforward!

Good to know! I used to struggle with Ubuntu, so I'm looking for alternatives that are easier to set up.

Just remember to check if your games are compatible with Linux! Steam has made great progress, but there are still some titles to watch out for.

For a first timer, I think Linux Mint is perfect! It’s user-friendly and can help you get familiar with Linux without overwhelming you. Plus, Mint's Cinnamon desktop feels quite similar to Windows, making the transition easier!

Using KDE with Mint might not be the best fit though. Mint is optimized for Cinnamon. If you really want KDE, maybe check out Kubuntu or Tuxedo.

Definitely agree about Mint! It’s great for newcomers, especially if you go for the Cinnamon or XFCE versions.
