Questions about System Backups and Upgrading Hardware

I'm new to this forum and have some questions about backups and restoring files/apps. I'm overdue for a backup of my workstation and want to create a system image to save everything at once. I game quite a bit, so I have a good number of Steam and Xbox games installed on my PC. If I reset my entire PC and restore it from this image, will I be able to jump right into my games, or will I need to redownload them? Also, let's say I have some games stored on an m.2 SSD and others on a regular SSD. Will I need to wipe and format those drives, or does the image keep all that data intact? Lastly, about hardware upgrades – if I upgrade my motherboard and CPU, can I install Windows 11 using a flash drive and then back up all my files with the system image? Thanks for your help!

Creating a system image captures everything on your setup, including Windows, your programs, Steam and Xbox games, and all your settings. So, if you wipe your PC and restore from that image, your games should work fine without needing to redownload, unless they have online verification or are in the cloud. However, be careful: a system image isn't great with major hardware changes. If you swap out your motherboard and CPU, your old image might not work because of driver conflicts. Instead, install the new hardware, do a clean Windows 11 install, then reinstall your drivers. After that, you can restore your files and point Steam/Xbox to your existing game folders without losing any data. As for your games on the secondary SSD, they won't get affected by a fresh OS install, and you'll just need to add those folders back in Steam and Xbox.

Thanks for clarifying that! Would it be a good idea to move all my data from one SSD to another and format the empty drive for the new Windows installation?
