Best OS Options for an Older PC to Improve Performance?

I'm looking for advice on switching the operating system for my daughter's older Windows 10 PC, as it's running sluggishly, especially with booting taking around 10 minutes. She mostly plays Minecraft, and I've seen various videos suggesting that changing the OS could enhance performance. While I'm not a complete novice, my experience with Linux from a few years ago was challenging due to compatibility issues with my graphics card and command-line installations. I'm hoping to find an OS that's easy to set up and user-friendly, particularly for gaming purposes. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance!

Consider Ubuntu if you're willing to tinker a bit, but for a straightforward experience, Linux Mint or Zorin OS are great choices. They have a familiar layout and are easy to customize. If she's only playing Java Edition, any of these should work fine!

You might want to check out Linux Mint, especially the versions using the MATE or XFCE desktop environments. They're lightweight and perfect for older hardware, plus they're user-friendly for beginners.

For a quick, ready-to-go OS, you could look into Nobara, as it comes preconfigured with a lot of useful tweaks. Just remember to check compatibility with the version of Minecraft she plays!

Keep in mind, Linux has improved compatibility over the past few years, but sometimes you need to do a bit of work to get games running, especially Bedrock Edition. If that’s what she plays, exploring options like MCPELauncher could help. Otherwise, try out some lightweight distros like Lubuntu or Puppy Linux depending on her system's specs.

It's true that many people see improvements with Linux, but if boot times are a concern, you might want to think about upgrading to an SSD for a significant speed boost. As for Linux, be wary that the stock Minecraft launcher can be a bit clunky; you may prefer using something like Prism Launcher instead.
