Why does my monitor only show video via a USB-C to HDMI dongle?

I recently got a monitor that has a strange issue: it only displays video when I connect it using a USB-C to HDMI dongle. This happens with both my MacBook and my Android phone. The person who gave me the monitor previously used it with a VGA cable. Unfortunately, I don't have any Macs with HDMI outputs to test further. When I try using it with my PC, it fails to output any video over standard HDMI, despite testing with three different cables. I also can't check if the dongle works with USB-C on my PC. Just to clarify, it does work with the dongle on my Mac and with VGA on an older PC.

It looks like your monitor could be a rebranded ViewSonic. Have you tried contacting their support? They might have specific drivers or setup advice for your model.

It sounds like a compatibility issue with the monitor. Sometimes, OEM monitors have quirks with certain connections. Make sure the monitor's firmware is up to date if that's possible, and check the settings in both your Mac and phone to see if there are options for display mode.

Could you share the model of your monitor? That might help in figuring out if there are known issues or specific settings that could resolve the problem.
