I'm working with a B450M A Pro Max 2 motherboard, and I noticed it only has a 4-pin CPU power slot. My new power supply unit (PSU) came with an 8-pin CPU power cable. Is it safe to connect just half of the 8-pin cable to the 4-pin slot?

I've been in the same boat before! I had a prebuilt where the motherboard only had a 4-pin slot while the PSU offered an 8-pin. It worked well for me, just double-check that it's properly seated in the slot. I once mishandled it, and my PC wouldn't boot, which was a relief in hindsight because I didn't fry anything!
You can definitely use the 8-pin cable in the 4-pin slot! most of them are designed to be compatible. Just make sure that the connection is secure, as some connectors have a locking mechanism that you need to engage properly. That way, everything stays safe and snug!

True, but just keep in mind that not all PSUs come with cables that split easily, so be sure of what you've got before connecting.
