Is it safe to disconnect my D drive for better performance?

I've been experiencing some major performance issues with my computer lately. My hard drive seems to be running at 100% all the time without any clear reason. I've run some check disk commands, and they didn't show any problems, but my computer has slowed down significantly, making it hard to run games and other applications. I'm considering disconnecting my D drive and just working off my SSD until I can get a new PC. Is this a good idea?

You should check which application or service is causing the high disk usage. Sometimes certain programs can be the culprits behind system slowdowns.

It might be an indexing issue. You can do a quick search to find solutions for that. I can't recall the exact fix right now, but it’s worth looking into.

Yes, disconnecting your D drive could definitely improve your performance if it’s malfunctioning. Just keep in mind that you'll lose access to anything on that drive until you replace it. Also, remember that check disk only looks for logical errors, not hardware failures. You might want to check the SMART status of your drive using a tool like CrystalDiskInfo to get a more accurate picture of its health.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by it running at 100%. If it's a traditional spinning hard drive, it always spins at its rated speed when turned on, like a 5400 RPM drive. Some operating systems can put drives to sleep if they're not in use, but that usually applies when the computer is idle too.
